Supporting Carers in GP Surgeries

A dedicated team working with you to help identify and support carers in your practice.

A GP Carer Liaison Worker working with the Montpelier Health Centre team

Carers Support works in partnership with GP practices across Bristol and South Gloucestershire to help identify and support unpaid carers—especially those caring for someone living with dementia. We offer practical tools, training, and recognition to help surgeries become more carer-aware and carer-friendly.

Why Carer Awareness Matters in Primary Care

Carers often visit GP surgeries more frequently than the people they care for, yet many remain unidentified. Early identification and support can significantly improve carers’ wellbeing and reduce pressure on health services. GP surgeries are uniquely placed to make a difference.

How We Support GP Surgeries

Our GP Carer Liaison Workers work directly with practices to:

  • Help identify carers and record them in medical systems
  • Provide carer awareness training for staff
  • Share resources and referral pathways
  • Support practices to develop a clear carers offer
  • Promote flexible appointments and carer-friendly policies

We also offer a GP Carer Awards Programme to recognise and celebrate good practice.

The GP Carer Awards Programme

This programme is designed to help GP surgeries assess and improve their support for carers. It’s a collaborative process led by our GP Carer Liaison Workers, who guide practices through a carer-friendly audit based on agreed criteria.

Award Levels

  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Bronze

Practices earn points for actions such as:

  • Signposting carers to support services
  • Offering flexible appointments for carers and the person they care for
  • Including carer-related questions in health checks
  • Identifying carers in medical records
  • Providing carer awareness training to staff

Successful practices receive an award certificate that can be displayed to patients and shared with the CQC as evidence of good practice.
