This summer, twenty young carers from Bristol and South Gloucestershire took part in an inspiring music project with The Bath Philharmonia Orchestra. Over a week in August, they explored instruments, wrote lyrics, and composed music around the theme of “connections.”
For young carers—children and young people under 18 who provide care for a family member—opportunities like this are vital. Caring responsibilities can lead to isolation, stress, and missed chances to simply enjoy being young. Our Young Carers Service exists to change that, offering respite, social activities, and trusted support so they can thrive—not just cope.
This project gave young carers time away from their caring roles, a chance to build confidence, and a space to connect with others who understand their experiences. At the end of the creative week, they performed their music for family and friends at Beacon Hall. Then, in October, their work was orchestrated and performed at the prestigious Bath Forum, with the young carers joining the full orchestra in front of an audience of over a thousand people.
One participant, nine-year-old Tazante, summed up the joy of the experience:
“I enjoyed playing the glockenspiel and just being here.”
Her words reflect what matters most—moments of fun, friendship, and pride.
There are over 4,800 young carers in Bristol and many more in South Gloucestershire. Projects like this show why recognition, respite, and support are essential.
