New Evaluation Highlights the Impact of the Young Carers in Schools Programme

5th January 2026

We’re pleased to share the findings from an independent evaluation of the Young Carers in Schools (YCiS) programme, which highlights the positive difference the programme makes for young carers. Led by Carers Trust and The Children’s Society and delivered locally by services including Carers Support Bristol and South Gloucestershire, YCiS is helping schools identify, understand and better support young carers to thrive.

The evaluation shows that schools taking part in YCiS are making a real difference for young carers:

  • Attendance improves: Young carers at schools with the award missed 6% fewer school days – the equivalent of eight extra lessons.
  • Identification improves: Schools involved in the programme record three times as many young carers as those not involved, ensuring early support for the UK’s estimated one million young carers.
  • Staff training matters: 87% of school staff said the award improved their understanding of young carers’ challenges.
  • Awareness grows: 77% of schools saw greater understanding among all pupils, not just those who are carers.
  • Wellbeing improves: 62% of staff agreed that young carers’ emotional wellbeing had improved as a result of achieving the award.

Young carers themselves shared the difference this support makes:

“I feel like I am now less nervous as a result of the young carers support in school.”

“Knowing that teachers know the challenges we face makes us feel safe.”

Alongside the report, two powerful short films written by young carers – More than Late and Silent Strength – bring these stories to life.
