Carers Week 2026 has begun with the publication of a new report calling for better recognition and support for carers across the UK.

The report, Building Carer Friendly Communities, highlights the important role that communities, services and organisations play in supporting people who care for someone else.

Why carer friendly communities matter

Carer friendly communities are places where carers are:

  • recognised and understood
  • valued for the support they provide
  • able to access help as part of everyday life

They include local services, workplaces, community groups and public spaces that are designed with carers in mind.

What the research shows

While many communities are committed to supporting carers, the reality is not always consistent.

The research found that:

  • 44% of carers do not feel their role is understood or valued by their community
  • 36% of current and former carers said a lack of carer friendly support had a negative impact on their physical or mental health

These findings highlight the gap between intention and experience — and the need for continued focus on improving support for carers.

A call for change

The report sets out clear recommendations for:

  • national government
  • local services
  • communities and organisation

to help make a lasting difference to the lives of carers.

Supporting carers locally

As part of Carers Week, we’re bringing carers together locally through a range of activities focused on wellbeing, connection and access to support.

Our Caring Matters 2026 event in Southmead will bring carers together with local organisations and professionals, creating space to focus on health, wellbeing and practical support in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Alongside this, we also ran a session as part of the Festival of Nature:

Nurture by Nature: Walk and nature connection for carers

This gentle and restorative session brought together a relaxed walk with simple nature‑connection activities, giving carers the opportunity to step away from their caring role for a while and spend time outdoors.

During the session, carers were able to:

  • slow down and notice the natural surroundings
  • experience the wellbeing benefits of being in nature
  • connect with other carers in a supportive, understanding space

The walk took place at a gentle pace with regular stops, making it accessible for most abilities.

Together, activities like these show what carer friendly communities can look like in practice — creating spaces where carers feel recognised, supported and less alone.
