Around 70 members of staff from SGS College recently took part in Young Carers Awareness training delivered by Carers Support during the college's staff inset day.
The training sessions, led by Vicki Houselander, Young Carers in Schools Development Worker, and Joss Tagg, Young Carers Service Manager, were delivered at both the WISE and Filton campuses. The sessions helped staff build their understanding of the challenges faced by young carers and young adult carers, and how they can identify and support students balancing education with caring responsibilities.
SGS College has a strong track record of supporting young carers. The college has previously achieved the Young Carers in Schools Award and has a dedicated young carers lead in place. Students also have access to a range of support through the college's wellbeing team, alongside a dedicated Young Adult Carers Policy which sets out how the college will support young people with caring responsibilities.
We would like to thank SGS College for its ongoing commitment to creating an environment where young adult carers are recognised, understood and supported to succeed in their studies.
Young adult carers aged 16 and over who are studying at SGS College can find information about the support available to them on the college website.
Vicki Houselander, Young Carers in Schools Development Worker at Carers Support, said:
"It's encouraging to see so many staff taking part in the training and demonstrating their commitment to understanding the experiences of young carers and young adult carers. By recognising the unique challenges these students face, colleges can play a vital role in helping them achieve their full potential."
