Paying for a Carer’s Break

Caring for someone is a generous and loving role—but it’s also demanding. Whether you’re supporting a loved one with a long-term condition, disability, or age-related needs, taking time out to rest and recharge is essential. Breaks help carers stay well, prevent burnout, and continue providing care with energy and resilience.

This page explains the types of breaks available, how to pay for them, and where to find support—both nationally and locally in Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

What is a Carer’s Break?

A carer’s break is a short pause in day-to-day caring—lasting from a few hours to several weeks. It’s a chance to rest, reset, and return to your caring role with renewed strength. Breaks can be:

  • Just for you
  • For the person you care for
  • Something you enjoy together

Types of Carer’s Breaks

Breaks Just for You (Giving You Time Away)

  • Carer retreats or holidays – organised getaways, sometimes with funding support
  • Wellbeing activities – counselling, yoga, peer support groups, and more
  • Short Break Grants – financial help to fund the break you choose

Breaks for the Person You Care For (Giving You Time Off)

  • Sitting services – a volunteer or care worker stays at home while you take time out
  • Homecare services – professional carers visit to help with daily tasks
  • Day centres – community-based activities, meals, and company
  • Short-term residential stays – a few days or weeks in a care home
  • Emergency cover – immediate support during unexpected crises

Breaks You Can Enjoy Together

  • Supported holidays – trips where care staff travel with you
  • Family breaks with on-site support – accommodation with care support included

How to Pay for a Carer’s Break

Start with a Carer’s Assessment

A Carer’s Assessment is a chance to talk about your situation and the support you need. It can help you access practical help, respite, and other services designed to make life a little easier. It may also open the door to funded support, so you don’t have to manage everything on your own.

Financial assessment from your local council

The person you care for may be eligible for help through Direct Payments or a Personal Budget. These funds can be used to arrange care and support that makes a break possible—for example, paying for a trusted care worker, covering the cost of a short residential stay, or arranging respite services. This flexibility helps ensure you get time to rest, knowing your loved one is well supported.
