Caring for a loved one can be an exhausting and emotionally draining job. As a young adult carer, you are managing demanding responsibilities that most people don’t fully understand or even notice.
You may have less time and energy to do the things that you want to do, and feel like your life prospects are limited compared to other people around you. Because you spend so much time looking after someone else, it is very easy to forget to look after yourself.
This section will explore some of the ways you can make time and space to take care of yourself and find the services you need if you are struggling.
Do you feel tired and worn out most or all of the time? Are you easily irritated by people and things around you? Do you struggle to fall asleep? Do you find yourself uninterested in things you used to enjoy doing? All of these are common signs that you are suffering from high levels of stress and burnout.
It is important that you pay attention to how you feel and how it is affecting your behaviour so that you can take better care of yourself and get the help you need.
Sometimes it will feel very obvious to us that we are stressed out and need help, but sometimes we can be so busy managing all of our responsibilities that we don’t notice.
It’s important that you find ways to relax and unwind that work for you. Think about things that you enjoy doing, and that help you to forget about the things in life that worry and frustrate you.
We’ve come up with a few suggestions we hope will help get you started. Everyone is different, so don’t worry if something that is recommended by others doesn’t work for you.
